What is the procedure for downloading and installing Notation products?
Solution
The procedure for installing Notation products is the same for both the trial version and full purchased version of Notation products, except for the first step below.
If you are installing the full version of a Notation product, and the trial version is currently installed on your system, it is a good idea, although not usually required, that you first uninstall the trial version. When you uninstall the trial Notation product, only the program itself will be uninstalled. Your song (.mid and .not) files will be preserved in any directories where you have saved these files. Also, your MIDI device configuration in Notation Musician or Composer will be saved and carried forward to the newly installed full version of Notation.
To uninstall the trial version of Notation Musician or Composer, follow these steps:
Click the Windows Start button at the lower, left corner of the screen. This will cause a menu to display.
Choose Settings from the menu, and then Control Panel.
In the Control Panel, choose Add/Remove Programs.
In the Add/Remove Programs list, click Notation Musician (or Composer).
You will be asked to confirm that you wish to uninstall the program. Respond with Yes.
Download the trial version of Notation from
http://www.notation.com/Download.htm
. The name of the file will be something like NotationMusician20TrialSetup.exe, where 20 indicates the version of Musician (2.0).
Or, download your registered copy of the full version of Notation Musician or Composer from the web page that was sent to you in the Notation order confirmation email from plimus.com. The file you download will be named something like NotationMusician20Setup.exe, where 20 indicates the version of Notation Musician (2.0).
When you download the NotationMusician20TrialSetup.exe or NotationMusician20Setup.exe program, your Internet browser will offer you the opportunity to: (1) specify what directory on your hard drive the file should be downloaded to, and (2) whether to "open" the file immediately upon completion of the downloading. Please make note of what directory the file has been downloaded to, since you may need to refer to that directory later. When your Internet browser offers you the opportunity to "open" the downloaded file, that means that it is offering you the opportunity to immediately run the Notation setup program. We advise that you allow your Internet browser to first download the file to a directory on your hard drive before you "open"-- or run-- the setup program. This way, if there is a problem running the setup program the first time, you will not have to download the file again.
Once your Internet browser has completed the downloading of the file to a directory on your hard drive, it will give you the opportunity to "open", which means "run", the Notation setup program. You can respond with Yes, to immediately install Notation Musician or Composer.
The Notation setup program will ask you a few questions about where you should install the Notation program files. Unless you have a good reason to do otherwise, it is a good idea to accept the setup program's default recommendation for where to install the Notation program files. Respond to the remaining questions in the setup program. The setup program will complete its tasks in typically 30 seconds.
he setup program will advise you to reboot your Windows system upon completion of the installation, and it is a good idea to do so. If you skip this step, and find that Notation does not start up correctly, then be sure to reboot Windows to successfully complete the installation.
If the Notation setup program abnormally terminates, then a very likely reason for this is that the NotationMusician20TrialSetup.exe or NotationMusician20Setup.exe file (or corresponding Composer file) was corrupted during downloading. That happens in a small percentage of file transmissions, but is more likely to happen if your Internet connection is unreliable. In that case it will be necessary for you to first delete the .exe that was downloaded to the directory that you noted in step #2. If you do not recall what directory the setup file was downloaded to, then you can use the Windows Start / Search option at the bottom left corner of your screen, to hunt for the downloaded file. After you delete the file, then repeat steps #2 through #5.
