Default Cannot Delete MIDI Device

I've been using Notation Composer for several years now. Every time I fire it up I get the warning Error opening MIDI output device: Game Controller 1.

I pressed qdc to delete the device (which was retired last year), saved the config file, and closed NC. But when I launch NC again, the error returns.

Perhaps someone out there knows the One Small Step I overlooked.

BTW, this is my first post, but I've been a MIDI freak since Bars & Pipes Pro launched on the Amiga computer back in the '80s.
