Stille Nacht 1820
This is the oldest authentic version of “Stille Nacht” or “Silent Night”. It was composed and first sung Christmas 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber and his friend Joseph Mohr, who had written the lyrics two years earlier It was written to be accompanied by guitar. First performed at a church in Oberndorf near Salzburg.
I am using this song in a Christmas Concert I am producing this year. The Compère will tell the story of the inception of the song and then sing 2 verses together with another person, accompanied by the guitar track only. The two voices in the recording are replaced for practice purposes by violin and cello. The timings of the guitar notes have been modified by piano roll editing for a fuller sound.
Best wishes,
Herbert
