Actually it's a tad more finessed than that. Composer opens all the tracks, but hides those that have no notes. This is because in some MIDI files, there may be a number of empty (no note) tracks that were inadvertently left in a sequenced file. Rather than showing a bunch of empty staves, Notation Software (both Musician and Composer) is designed to keep those staves/tracks, but hide them. If you want those tracks/staves to show in a Part (eg. the Conductor's score, or to create a Part for those staves), you can use Part/Display or define part. In that dialog, you can select the Part you want to change staves for, and change the staves as well. To learn more about Parts and how they're handled, you can see the Tutorial Videos at
